Mavis Kelly

Las Vegas, NV

Mavis Magleby Kelly passed away at age 93 on October 23, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born in Monroe, Utah, January 2, 1925 to Alma Woodruff Magleby Sr and Mildred Ann Crabb. Her family moved to Las Vegas after her junior year and she graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1943. After one year at the University of Utah she transferred to and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a degree in education.

Her teaching career began in McGill, Nevada. After one year, she moved back to Las Vegas and continued teaching at Vegas Heights Elementary School, Jim Bridger Middle School, Frank F. Garside Middle School, and John C. Fremont Junior High School. She continued her education and graduated from UNLV with a Masters Degree +32 in Library Science. She served as the Fremont school librarian for several years. She then finished her career by opening up and working as the Dell H. Robison Middle School librarian. She retired in 1992.

Mavis earned a living working in education, but her vocation was raising her two sons. Her avocations included Pi Betta Phi which she continued to support well after retirement. She was also actively involved in state and national library associations. She traveled extensively around the world. But some of her favorite trips were with her friends, also school librarians, as they traveled around Nevada to the annual state library conventions. Mavis also loved flowers, house plants, and flower arranging. As a young mother she loved digging around in her flowerbeds. In her middle aged years she studied Ikebana. In her latter years, even though her vision was limited, she always enjoyed live plants in her home as well as decorating her front door with live plants or flowers she had arranged. Mavis was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mavis is survived by her two sons: K. Patrick (Debbie) and G. Timothy (Janet); 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren; brother Hal Magleby. She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Spike Magleby and Cal Magleby; grandson, Cole; and her boyfriend, Louis F. Leon.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at the corner of Alexander and El Capitan. Interment will be at the Las Vegas Palm Northwest Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti. Online guestbook at www.maglebymortuary.com
