Werner Louis Verhaaren, 95, peacefully passed away June 9, 2014, to be reunited with his wife whom he has missed for 13 years. He was born September 12, 1918, in Hamburg, Germany to Theodore J. H. and Dorthora A. Fett Verhaaren. He was the third of six children. In September of 1929 he and his family immigrated to Utah.

Werner grew up in Salt Lake City. He attended the University of Utah, worked part-time at the Continental Bakery and was a member of the Tabernacle Choir until he was drafted. After basic training, he was stationed at Luke Field near Phoenix, AZ where he met his wife-to-be. He married F. Lynnette Dalton on November 11, 1943 in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple. They had two daughters, Nora and Ilene.

Werner served in the Air Force during WWII and the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he worked for a paper company and quickly worked his way up to their corporate offices in San Francisco, CA. He went back to school and earned an MBA from the University of San Francisco. One of his major accomplishments was recognizing the need and then creating a computer technology for the company for which he worked. He retired in 1985; he and his wife moved to the California’s Sierra foothills.

Werner joined the LDS Church in Germany with his parents and family. He held many leadership positions, spent years doing extraction and later indexing, but his favorite was ward organist. He enjoyed practicing, playing, performing, and teaching his skills; he also helped build an organ. He was a member of the AGO for many decades.

He and his wife moved to Richfield in 2000 to live with their daughter and son-in-law.

Werner is survived by his daughters: Nora (Larry) Lloyd, Richfield; and Ilene Lowe, Vancouver, WA; eight grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren; his sister, Caroline Boogard, Sunnyvale, CA; and sister-in-law, Alice Dalton, SLC.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; brothers: Carl, Theo and Bruno; sister, Hilda Nezos; son-in-law, George Lowe; and grandson, Aron Lloyd.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Magleby Mortuary, 50 South 100 West, Richfield, where friends may call after 1:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in the Richfield City Cemetery with military rites by the V.F.W.
