Virginia Gillespie
Manti, Utah
Virginia Ann Larsen Gillespie, 76, passed away August 23, 2012 in Provo. She was born December 12, 1935 in Manti to Lester A and Clara Reynolds Larsen. She married H. Aldridge Gillespie, July 18, 1958, in the Manti LDS Temple.
Virginia’s life was one of service to her family, her neighbors, and the Church.
In her early life, Virginia worked as a physicians’ aide and nurse, becoming certified as a radiation technician and continuing on to become a scrub nurse. Her dream at the time was to become a neurosurgeon and she had acquired the means to do so. But, then the missionary she had waited for returned home and 30 days later they married. She then choose the profession of full-time stay-at-home mother over her professional aspirations. She never looked back, but marvelously never lost her love of the medical profession. She read and absorbed everything medical she could and her library and knowledge grew. She had an unusual gift for diagnosing medical maladies and finding appropriate treatments. Her family, friends, and 500 +/- missionaries from the Tampico Mexico Mission will all attest to her contributions in keeping them healthy and out working.
Virginia loved gardening, quilting, genealogy, cooking, but most of all having her family near and “doing” for them. She was a supernal wife and mother.
She served over the years in nearly every calling in the Church; from ward genealogy chairperson to visiting teacher, from ward and stake Relief Society president and teacher to Cub Scout Den Mother, from wife and mother to Compassionate Service Leader, and from mission president’s wife to Temple Matron. She unquestionably loved the Lord and her family.
Virginia is survived by her husband of Manti; children: Clarice (Robert ) Hoffman, Muscat, Oman; James A. (Merri) Gillespie, Richmond, TX; Richard L. (Gabriela) Gillespie, Canton, MI; Brian K. (Mary Lou) Gillespie, Minten, NE; David L. (Eden) Gillespie, Bountiful, UT; 18 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; brother, Douglas R.
