Verna Roberts

Venice, Utah

In the early morning hours of October 6, 2018, Mom slipped peacefully through the veil and into the arms of her beloved daughter Tammy, for a joyous reunion after 48 years apart. Verna Cowley was born September 27, 1930, the only daughter of Varsall and Zelda Cowley. Her childhood was spent in the sleepy town of Venice where she made life-long friends and fond memories.

When Verna was 18, her best friend set her up on a blind date with a handsome cowboy from Annabella. Ray captured her heart and on April 14, 1949, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti Temple. After spending a year in Salt Lake City, Ray and Verna moved home to Venice where they settled and raised their family of four sons and two daughters.

Verna worked as a "number please" girl for the telephone company, at Christensen’s Department store and also made Forsey Bars. Her most loved job, however, was as a nurse’s aid at Sevier Valley Hospital where she worked for over 20 years. The last several of which were spent in the nursery taking special care of the babies. She was able to bathe and weigh most of her grandchildren.

Verna was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings in the Relief Society and Primary. She was also a 60 year member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She was instrumental in starting the annual pheasant hunter dinner in Venice. Her faith in her Savior never wavered as she served those around her with patience, empathy, compassion and unconditional love. She was sure to share her quick wit and sense of humor with those around her.

She lived a full life and enjoyed many things but her greatest love and proudest accomplishments were always her family. She was happiest when she was surrounded by family and friends.

Verna is survived by her children: Blain Roberts, Central Valley; Craig Roberts, CO; Mike (Cindy) Roberts, Vermillion; Ric (Teresa) Roberts, Venice; Lisa (Evan) Harrington, Venice; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Don (Joyce) Cowley, Brigham City.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband; daughter, Tammy Roberts; great-great-granddaughter, Aspen Rose; brothers: Val (Marjorie) Cowley, Clair (Bette) Cowley.

We love you, Mom, "a bushell and a peck and a hug around the neck". You were and always will be our soft place to land.
