Pat Barney
Richfield, Utah
Our beloved, gracious, and Christ-like mother, Tina Patricia "Pat" Larsen Barney, 88, rejoined our father, while surrounded by her family on the morning of November 27, 2016 in Richfield. Pat was born November 8, 1928 in Richfield, Utah to Lenord Deloy and Tina Baierline Larsen.
Mom was educated in Richfield schools. At a young age, she began working with her father on the Hawley Ranch in Three Creeks. She loved the work and especially loved the horses. She won a horse-pulling competition at the Sevier County Fair. Her parents taught her about the value of hard work, a value she taught to her own children and grandchildren.
Mom met our father, Willard J. Barney, Jr. during her teen years. Jay served in the Army during world War II. After he returned from the service they were married on December 15, 1945 in Richfield. Their marriage was solemnized June 30, 1947 in the Manti Temple. Together they built the home they lived in all their married life. This home was a happy, loving and safe retreat. Dad preceded her in death July 19, 2012.
Dad was a Master Electrician and owned the Barney Co. Mom pulled wires and helped him in the boat shop with anything she could. They were always a team. When their first child was born, they didn’t have a car so they rode a bike with the baby in the basket. Eventually they had two children in the basket before having a car.
Mom loved ceramics and became a certified instructor. She opened Pat’s Ceramics and began to teach ceramic classes. This was a hobby both Mom and Dad loved working at together. She also worked with Dad at the bowling alley when it first opened in Richfield. Their greatest happiness was always found with family. Family activities included outings, boating, water skiing, fishing, camping and deer hunting or just sitting on the front porch visiting with family and friends.
Mom cherished her membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ, held it dear, lived it every day, and taught her children to love it. She believed in doing what was right and helping anyone in need, and did so with humility. She served in many positions including the Primary, Jr. Sunday School, stake building schedule coordinator and MIA organizations. Her favorite church calling was as a Sacrament meeting greeter, where she welcomed everyone with a smile and a hug. She quickly became known as "Grandma Barney" to everyone.
Mom experienced many hardships during her early life and with her health. She learned how to overcome adversity and developed a fighting spirit. She fought for her family, for a good life and to endure to the end with grace.
We will deeply miss Mom’s chili, potato salad and cinnamon rolls; her love and tenderness, her love of the Savior and her eternal companion and their bond to each other. Mom loved her family and posterity and considered them her greatest blessing and her greatest achievement in life. She had a deep and abiding love for the Native American people, children, animals, and her community.
There were many angels in Mom’s life and we are so grateful for them. So many people, family, friends, home and visiting teachers, and all of those who served her at the Beehive Home were part of her family and she loved each of them.
Mom is survived by her children: Jayrene (Bryce) Nielsen, Patricia Ann (John) Jones, Lenard Jay (Pauline) Barney and David Scott (ShaReece) Barney. Along with these children they fostered young women who lived with them while attending school. Mary Ann Jim, Marilyn Boyd Cly, Teresa Baloo and Pauline Russell Boyd. Mom is survived by 19 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren and many foster grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters: Dean Frederick, and Vee (Wendell) Gleave.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; sister, Shirley Jensen; brother-in-law, Rell Frederick; and granddaughter, Jodie Ann Jones.
