Thais Griffin
Escalante, Utah
Thais Roe Griffin, age 86 passed away peacefully on July 12, 2017 surrounded by her husband and loving family in Panguitch, Utah. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to many. Thais was born September 1, 1930 to Wilford and Ruby Roe in Salina, Utah. She was the fourth of six children. She graduated from Garfield High School in Panguitch in 1948 and attended a year of college in Cedar City. While living in Panguitch, she met the love of her life, Bobby Gene Griffin, when he came over from Escalante to play for a local dance. From that moment on, it was love at first sight. They courted until Gene was called into military service overseas to Korea. Thais waited for his return and they were married on March 31, 1953 in the St. George Temple. They had five children: Mark, Gary, Brent, Melanie and Stephanie.
Thais was an active member of the LDS Church. She had a strong testimony of the Gospel and served faithfully in many callings throughout her life. Thais was known for her generous heart, quick wit, and ability to talk to anyone. She liked to sew, quilt, bake, collect dolls, and enjoyed listening to music, especially when played by family members. Thais also enjoyed going to the temple and working on her genealogy. She loved all kinds of colorful flowers and working in her yard, but most of all she loved her grandkids.
Gene became a barber and beauty operator setting up shop on Main Street in Escalante. While there the three boys were born. Later, her father built them a beautiful brick home where the two girls came into the family. Shortly after that, they bought a grocery store and Thais worked side by side with her husband Gene, for many years. The two were always together even up to her final hours.
Thais is survived by her husband and children: Gary (Sheila) Griffin, Woodland Hills; Brent (Kathie) Griffin, Escalante; Melanie (Joseph "JJ") Johnston, Las Vegas, NV; Stephanie (Matt) Volker, St. George; daughter-in-law, Tina Griffin, St. George; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; siblings: Beverly Crosby and Ardith Davis, both of Panguitch; Kenneth (Judy) Roe, Smithfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents; oldest son Mark Griffin; granddaughter, Angelie Volker; siblings: Earl (Evalyn) Roe, Winona (Harold) Sevy; brother-in-law: Arthur Crosby.
The family wishes to convey their thanks for the kind and compassionate service given by the Magleby Mortuary and the doctors and nurses at the Garfield Memorial Hospital. We would also like to thank the many friends, ward members and family that have shown love and extended their condolences at this time.
