Sylvia Kay Mortensen

June 27, 1950 — July 14, 2022

Sylvia Mortensen
South Jordan, Utah

Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Sylvia Kay Hortin Mortensen, passed away July 13, 2022 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She was born on June 27, 1950 to Hal C. and Barbara Wilson Hortin, in Coalville, Utah.

Sylvia graduated from North Summit High School in Coalville and the Continental College of Beauty in Salt Lake City.  She married Fred D. Mortensen on May 8, 1971, in Park City, Utah. He preceded her in death on July 8, 2014.

Sylvia and Fred were fabulous hosts whether in their home in Coalville, Salina, South Jordan, or at their beloved Gooseberry.  All were welcomed and usually left well fed.

She enjoyed her family, cooking, old western movies, history, traveling, entertaining and most of all, talking.  Sylvia was blessed with a beautiful singing voice, a very specific style in dress and interior design, a love of life, an amazing sense of humor and an infectious laugh.

Those who knew Sylvia loved her “Sylviaisms”.  These were words and phrases she would spew out at people, no matter the occasion and get away with it.

Sylvia is survived by her children: Tawnie Sorensen (Steve King) Salina; Matthew Mortensen, South Jordan; granddaughters: Avery Kae Higgins and Halie Dee Higgins, both of Salina; sister, Lisa (Darby) McClean, Grand Junction, CO; brothers: Scott Hortin, Kearns; Jeff (Vicky) Hortin, Evanston, WY; step-grandchildren: Kaler King and Kason King, both of Tremonton; Lexi (Casey) Mortenson, Aubrey, TX; great-grandchildren: Traisen and Rylee; siblings-in-law: Vernal (Anora) Mortensen, Salt Lake City; Mary Jane Mortensen, St. George; life-long friends: Mugs and Craig Vernon, Coalville; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Tobie Dee Mortensen; grandson, Tucker Dean Sorensen; brother, Stanley “Zeke” Hortin; sister-in-law, Lorale Hortin.
