Sylvan Staples

Central Valley, Utah

Our father Orson Sylvan Staples left this frail existence to meet his beloved family members on the other side of the veil on August 26, 2013, in Central Valley, although he wanted to tarry here longer.

Dad lived a quiet, yet hard working unassuming life beneath the beautiful Cove Mountains. He was born, raised and lived his entire 91 years in Central Valley. Born October 28, 1922 to Elva and Delilah Washburn Staples. The 3 rd member of a family of 13 children.

In the Manti Temple on June 8, 1942, he was sealed for time and all eternity to his high school sweetheart, Florence Lott. To this union four children were born: Sylvia (Steve) Peterson, Pamela (Dale) Magleby, Dallin E. Staples, and John Glen (Meg) Staples. They are blessed with a posterity of 72. Florence passed away February 4, 1964. He married Marjorie Jensen December 13, 1964. She died September 10, 2001.

While serving in World War II he fought in the Battle of Okinawa on the Ryukyu Islands as a frontline infantryman. He endured the horrors of war, yet did not let that sorrowful time define him. He earned several medals including the Purple Heart.

Dad and Mom owned and operated the Central Mercantile for several years. Upon his return from the war he received mechanical training lending his technical skills to Pearson & Crofts, Sevier School District, UDOT, and with his brother Kay, they operated the Staples Texaco in Richfield.

For 30 years he was a member of the Sevier County Sheriff’s Jeep Posse and thoroughly enjoyed his service. He assisted in many rescue operations.

Being an avid sportsman, he especially loved the fall hunting season. The archery hunt was his favorite, he often got the big one and won trophies for his prowess. He claims that after the war he and a good friend were the first fishermen into Donkey Lake on the Boulder Mountain with a four-wheel drive. Gone were the many summers hiking in as a young kid.

Later in life he built a cabin at Fish Lake. Many laborious hours and enjoyment were spent there. The winter months were spent in St. George, where he hiked and explored the beautiful "Red Rocks."

Sylvan is also survived by his siblings: Terrill (Bonnie) Staples, Kay (Melody) Staples, Ron (LaRene) Staples, Mary D Powell, Carol (June) Jensen, Elnora (Ken) Mason, Louisa Hoover (Fred) Swain; brothers-in-law: Dorraine Roberts, Russell (Diane) Jensen; sisters-in law: Sarah Jensen, Pauline Jensen, Kathy Barney, Julia Oldroyd, Madeline (Pete) Codella.

Also preceded in death by parents; siblings: Vance (Rayola), Leon, Gloria Roberts, Glenda (Bill) Gentry, Orene (Walt) Zobell; brothers-in-law: Kay Powell, Larry Hoover; sisters-in-law: Juana Staples, Maxine Staples; and great-granddaughter, Jolie Magleby.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. in the Magleby Mortuary Chapel, 50 South 100 West, Richfield, where friends may call from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Joseph Cemetery with military rites by the Monroe American Legion Post #37.
