Stephen Stoner

Boulder, Utah

Stephen Richard Stoner, 60, our loving son, father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on February 15, 2015 in his home in Boulder, Utah after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Steve was born on August 10, 1954 in Barstow, California to Richard S. and Diane Linnebach Sweeney. After his parents’ divorce, his mother married John I. Stoner who adopted Steve and his siblings.

Steve was raised in Salt Lake and attended Granite High School. He married Jeannie Van Skike in 1971. They had two sons: Stephen John and Daniel Richard. Steve and Jeannie later divorced.

Steve moved to Boulder 30 years ago. He loved the people of Boulder and the beautiful mountains and lakes. He proclaimed himself the "King of Boulder Mountain." Steve was an accomplished artist and nature photographer. He was a fly fishing guide for many years, taking many on trips and adventures they will never forget. His love of nature, animals and the Boulder mountain and lakes is legendary. He hiked the mountains almost daily and knew every lake and stream. He even had names for many of the animals in the area.

Steve is survived by his sons: Stephen (Pam) Bruehl, Daniel (Nannette) Bruehl; grandchildren: Ashley, Tyler, Ryan, Nathan and a new granddaughter due this summer; mother, Diane (Max) Bleckert; father, John (Revona) Stoner; step-mother, Helen Sweeney; siblings: Kathy (Mike) Gardner, Dana (Dave) Dineen, Jill (Kelly) Huntsman, Jeff (Sharon) Sweeney and Natalie (Gene) Fink, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Steve is preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Richard Sweeney, ex-wife, Jeannie Bruehl, and grandson, Jake Bruehl.

Steve’s family would like to express our thanks to his wonderful "Boulder Family" who cared for Steve during his illness and for the friendship and kindness the town of Boulder has always shown Steve. We would also like to express our gratitude to the Huntsman Cancer Center for the kindness and care they provided.
