Shelton G. Dowell

Shelton Gillespie Dowell, Jr, 94, passed away February 23, 2015 in Monroe, Utah. Welcomed home by his dear wife Agnes Verdell Hunt Dowell, nearly a year to the day of her passing, to continue their journey beyond their 63 years on earth.
He was born January 18, 1921 in El Paso, Texas to Shelton Gillespie and Mary Elizabeth Byrd Dowell. He and Verdell eloped to Las Vegas and were married May 20, 1950. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo Utah Temple.
In Shelton’s earlier years, he served in the Navy, was an avid snow skier at the Arizona Snow Bowl and enjoyed golf. He was a 32 nd degree Mason and was a member of the Elks Lodge. He worked for the Coconino County Road Department, after delivering gas for the Mobil Oil Company for several years. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved his calling as ward clerk and was a most dedicated home teacher in both Flagstaff and Monroe.
In 2006, Shelton and Verdell moved to Monroe where they enjoyed life being entertained, watched over and taken care of by their son Robert and his family. He loved riding around the mountains and valleys of Sevier County and drinking a cold diet Pepsi.
He is survived by children: John Shelton (Vicki) Dowell, Pinetop, AZ; Dan Littlefield Dowell, Salt Lake City; Alan Byrd (Teresa) Dowell, Flagstaff, AZ; Robert Michael (Jerrele) Dowell, Monroe, UT; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren.
He is also preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Barney; sister, Mary Beth Shipp.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 12:00 Noon in the Monroe 1 st and 4 th LDS Ward Chapel, 50 East 200 North. Friends may call at the ward chapel in Monroe on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.
Additional services and burial will take place the Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 12:00 Noon at the Lake Mary LDS Ward Chapel, located at 4165 South Lake Mary Rd., Flagstaff, AZ 86001. Friends may call at the church in Flagstaff Saturday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Citizens Cemetery, 1300 South San Francisco, Flagstaff, AZ with military rites by the Flagstaff V.F.W Post #1709.
