Shane Patterson
Richfield, Utah
Shane Tyler Patterson, beloved son, brother, father, uncle and friend, 39, died April 30, 2016. After a life long battle with mental health concerns, Shane took his own life in the hills east of Salina. Shane was born April 8, 1977, in Richfield, Utah. He was the fourth of six children and the son of Edwin Clark Patterson and Carolyn Shirley Christiansen Patterson.
Shane grew up and attended school in Richfield, receiving his GED from Cedar Ridge High School. Later on he received a high school diploma from Sanpete High School and completed training and certification in automotive and diesel mechanics and auto cad design.
Shane had a passion for fixing things and making things work better. He was a jack of many trades, would try just about any job to make a living, and like to dicker and barter, generally hoping the other guy got the better side of the deal.
Shane loved working with tools and excelled as a mechanic. He worked for Red Hills Truck and Auto Repair in Richfield and enjoyed his time on the road helping truckers and travelers continue their journey. Shane also learned upholstery repair, and his favorite hobby was designing environmentally sustainable buildings constructed out of used shipping containers.
Shane struggled with mental illness throughout most of his life. Those struggles led to an addiction to drugs and alcohol which resulted in choices that incarcerated him on and off for several years. During this time, Shane learned to better master his addictions and develop a stronger sense of self-worth. He also furthered his education and developed a strong love for family history and heraldry. Once out, Shane worked hard to make a difference, encourage others, and to get back on his feet.
Shane was the brother of Leslie Clark (Elisa) Patterson, Kristina Carol (Fadi) Sakkijha, Robert Edwin Patterson, Marc Andrew (Randie) Patterson, and Rachael Marie Patterson; uncle of Cody, Clinton (Daniella), Brenin, Rebecca, Leslie Ann, Hana, Laith, Nixon, and Oakley, and best friend of Gayla Critchfield, LaNeal Nelson, and Robbie Thomas. He was also the father of Tyann.
He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents: Aubra Clark and Veone Christensen Patterson, Shirley Raisor and Mike Janssen, and Forrest 'N' Christiansen.
Special thanks to Sheriff Nate Curtis and the Sevier County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue who worked tirelessly until they found Shane; parole officer, Reed Bean; Jim Hare of Red Hills Truck and Auto Repair, the LDS 12 step-program, and bishops: Jeffrey Raisor and Marvin Bagley.
