Sarah Ellen Howes Laird, 99, passed away April 26, 2011. She was born February 12, 1912 to William and Sophia Mathis Howes in Marysvale, Utah. She has resided in the Ely, Nevada area for the last two years, where she died at the White Pine County Care Center.
She married Fred Hunter "Shorty" Laird from Ely, Nevada, where they met at the Old Labor Temple. They married July 15, 1931 in Marysvale, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple June 18, 1968. He preceded her in death in 1983 leaving Ellen a widow the last 27 years of her life.
From this union were born two children: Fred H. Laird of Alamo, NV; and LaWana Mae Fisher of Ruth, Nevada. They have nine grandchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Ellen and her husband, "Shorty" Laird, owned a home in Junction, Utah. For many years she took care of the Senior Center for Piute County, where she did much community service and making many handmade quilts. During their life together they were forced to move for work to sustain themselves. Ellen supported her husband in all his endeavors to provide for their family.
Over the years she served in many capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the Circleville LDS Chapel, where friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Howes Cemetery located between Junction and Marysvale, Utah. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
