Ruth Case Madsen, 97, passed away May 1, 2015 in Monroe. She was born March 29, 1918 in Mt. Emmons, Utah to Floyd Henry and Edith Goodrich Case, the oldest of six children.
She was in the first graduating class of Altamont High in 1936 and then attended BYU. She married Myron A Madsen, August 6, 1939 in Boneta, Utah. The marriage was solemnized in the Manti Utah Temple on March 29, 1951. They were married 71 years before Myron passed away in 2011. They had five children together.
Myron was drafted into the Army in 1944, which left Ruth home alone with 4 little children under the age of 5. They moved to Monroe in 1946 when Myron was discharged from the military after WWII and made Monroe their home.
Family was very important to Ruth. She was a wonderful homemaker and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She quilted and crocheted beautifully. She made many quilts and afghans and dolls for her children and grandchildren. She and Myron always had a big garden well into their 90's and canned all their produce. She loved to cook and bake homemade bread by hand and did this until recently. Her home is filled with many wonderful memories. She was very independent and grateful to be able to remain there until just before her death.
Ruth was an active member of the LDS Church and served as ward Young Women’s president, in ward and stake Relief Society presidencies and in many other callings as well. In 1987, she and Myron served an LDS mission to Jackson, Mississippi. They also served as ordinance workers in the Manti Utah Temple for nine years.
She is survived by children: Elaine Nelson, Fremont; Floyd A (Sue) Madsen, Salem; Myrna (Everitt) Thomson, Nephi; Maxine (Bardett) Durfee, Monroe; Tamra (Kenneth) Madsen, Payson; 20 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Gwen Sprouse, Roosevelt; Peggy (Darwin) Morrell, Yuma, AZ; Gayle (Ray) Durney, Broomfield, CO. She is also preceded in death by her parents; grandsons: Curt Madsen, David Durfee; siblings: Deane Parker, Keith Case; and son-in-law, DeVon Nelson.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 12:00 Noon in the Monroe 1 st LDS Ward Chapel, 50 East 200 North, where friends may call Thursday morning from 10:00 to 11:30. Burial will be in the Monroe City Cemetery. Funeral Directors, Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
