Ruby Bardsley Shand passed away at her home on November 12, 2016. She was born in Centerfield, Utah on September 5, 1921 to Roy Slater and Edna Nielson Bardsley. 　She had two older brothers, Howard and Maylin, and one older sister, Berniece (Pickett). Her siblings preceded her in death.

Ruby was proud of her heritage and where she came from. 　Growing up in the Gunnison Valley area provided her with very fond opportunities, experiences, and memories and she always remained loyal to her home town and had a soft spot in her heart for the people of that area.

After graduating from Gunnison Valley High School, Ruby headed to Salt Lake City to attend Quish Beauty School. 　Her love and talent for cutting, styling, coloring and perming hair was evident at a very early age, and her desire to become independent and successful led her to master the skills needed to become a cosmetologist. 　She moved to Manti after completing beauty school and set up her own business. She became well known for her pin curls and finger waves and continued in this occupation for many years. 　In her later life, she also worked at Gunnison Valley Hospital and served in the Manti Temple.

Ruby met Jack Shand in Manti when he was on leave from the Air Force during World War II. 　They fell in love and were married in 1945. 　They became the parents of David, Joe (Joan), Susan (Randy) Larsen and John William Shand who died at birth. 　Ruby and Jack also opened their home and hearts to two very special neighbor kids, Nola and George Sears, whom they treated just like they were their own, loving and claiming them as their "unofficially adopted" children.

Family meant everything to Ruby. 　Jack died suddenly in 1977, and Ruby courageously continued her life without her husband until she died, devoting and dedicating her time, talents, experience and love to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and great nephews, and friends too numerous to count. 　Hundreds of recipients benefitted from her talents with hair, her amazing cooking and candy-making skills, her volunteer work, her handwork, and her advice and counsel. 　Ruby was a true and trusted friend to all who knew and loved her and was a die-hard supporter of every family member. 　She was always there to help when anyone needed her. 　Grandchildren strongly felt that Grandma Ruby’s house was a "safe haven:" A refuge from the outside world and its associated problems, a welcoming place, a safe and secure place, a place where love abounded, food was plenty, no judgments were made, and a place where Grandma always was.

Ruby served in multiple Church callings and had a valiant love of Christ and the gospel, as well as a devout testimony. 　Ruby was outspoken and feisty but truly an incredible example of courage, grace, humility, kindness, generosity, love, patience, understanding, strength, helpfulness and giving. She will be missed.

Her family extends very special thanks to her amazing Home Health care provider and dear friend, Fay Truitt, as well as her Hospice care providers, Pat, ShannaLee and Carl.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Manti Stake Center. Friends may call prior to services at the Church from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Manti City Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
