As a child Rick lived with his family in Heber City. He and his family moved to Mt. Pleasant when he was 11 years old. He then attended school in Mt. Pleasant and Moroni. Rick actively worked on the family farm and loved to ride horses.

After high school, Rick entered National Guard training, and was then in the Army Reserves. He attended Snow College before and after his mission to Montana for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rick had numerous callings in the church, usually in a missionary capacity. Rick and Andrea lived in Gunnison, where he did auto body repair and for 20 years raised and sold Dachshund puppies. Rick and Andrea served a mission in Peoria, Illinois and volunteered at the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison.
