Richard Hanson

Annabella, Utah

Richard Leon Hanson, husband of Carole Hunt Hanson, passed from this realm on June 4, 2019 at the age of 73. They were married in a Y2K wedding on 1-1-00 and over their lifetimes shared 49 years of love, trials, and adventures.

Richard was a brilliant man, hilariously witty, sharp as a razor, and as knowledgeable in many areas as the Library of Congress.

Richard was a farmer extraordinaire who could grow anything. He was a beekeeper who carefully tended and grew his hives to help propagate and insure the future of agriculture. He worshiped and had tremendous passion and respect for his great love, Mother Earth.

Richard started his own construction business and added so much to so many people's homes: building, crafting, creating, repairing, and designing.

He was a meticulously precise thinker and a tireless worker. He was a genius as an electrical engineer who was involved in the beginnings of computer design with a degree from the U of U. He traveled the world developing and installing flight simulators for military aircraft spending many months abroad in Turkey, Thailand, Japan and other countries. He worked all over the United States on military bases in Hawaii, Texas, Florida, Alabama, Washington D. C. and many more.

Richard’s least favorite place in the world was Del Rio, Texas which he called "The armpit of America." His most favorite foreign place was Turkey, where he walked with wonder in the footsteps centuries later where Alexander, The Great had once stood. His truest and most beloved place on earth was his little farm in Annabella, Utah. To him, it was heaven on earth and what he had always dreamed of. He never lost his childlike awe of the wonder and beauty of nature and it thrived well on Richard's farm.

Richard's highest dream was to be a farmer, live in the country, raise his beloved animals, and live in harmony with Mother Nature in her beautiful earthly garden. He achieved his dream at age 55. He adored his dogs: Popeye, Scutter, Squirt, and Mr. Bailey. He built his own home, carefully constructing each carefully thought out piece of the puzzle. He lived in harmony with the land he loved on his beautiful little farm. He could fix anything. He could solve the most complicated of problems. He was a pilot and flew helicopters. He was honest, hard working, and a very good man. Richard was also stubborn beyond words, opinionated, an old coot, a recluse, extremely dignified, very proud, fiercely loyal, quite shy, excessively private, a tree-hugger and very proud environmentalist, and a bleeding hearted liberal lifelong Democrat. He thought religion caused more problems in the world than it ever solved. He was a wonderful, deep, thoughtful, simple yet complicated man.

Richard is survived by his wife Carole with whom he shared the good, the bad, and the ugly. He was father of Heidi and Heather; step-father of Lisa, Miguel, Matt, Aspen, and Nate. He was the grandfather of Christopher, Jessica, Michelle, Kory, Shannon, Sean, Aria, Jonathan, Matthew, Keaola, Keadon, Anthony, Lux, and Avi. He was brother to Linda and Austin Hayward. Richard had few friends at his own choosing, but to those who he let into his life, he loved and respected them fiercely and at the deepest levels.

At Richard’s request, no services will be held. Many thanks to Dr. West and the medical staff at Sevier Valley Hospital who worked so diligently to save his life, the life flight team, and to the staff at Magleby Mortuary for their kind, respectful care and services. We are very grateful.

Rest in peace, Richard. You will be sorely missed.
