Richard Costigan

Panguitch, Utah

Richard Allan Costigan left this world and was welcomed into the arms of his loving Savior, Jesus Christ. He died very peacefully in Panguitch, Utah on July 29, 2020. He married Jolene Sevy in Escalante, Utah on November 22, 2002 by their good friend, Myron Cottam. It was a happy union and a respectful one. We were very much in love for the entire time. Richard’s quote on the day of marriage was "I love you more than I ever knew". He was a gentle, kind and very educated man. He knew so much about everything he put his heart into learning.

Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged August 1970.

Born December 23, 1946 in the state of Florida to James Gordon and Dorothy Anne Seymour Costigan. He was always in awe that he shared his birthday with the Prophet Joseph Smith. He was a faithful and obedient member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many church positions in his lifetime. He was an avid daily reader of his scriptures. He loved to learn about his brother and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a faithful journal keeper. He left this world with journals dating back to the early 1960's and his journal keeping was daily as well—never missed a day with the exception of the day he passed. His journals are valuable treasures.

Richard had a Master’s Degree in the Arts, which included all mediums. Sarah, his daughter, remembers him as an artist. All her life he was creating things. When she first found her own rhythm of creation, he gave her books, insights and ideas to help her along and inspire her. Both children have several pieces of his creations. They remind her of things he has said, advice for life, struggles, nicknames for grandchildren, the love and laughter. These memories she will cherish forever.

Levi, his son: My dad was awesome! His quirky and different perspectives were what made him the true man and father he was. He was a gentle giant that touched his children and others in so many ways. His outlook and views is what I will always remember and cherish. He taught me to look at things from a different point of view and that is what will guide me through my life forever.

He worked at Red Canyon Visitor Center as a recreation technician. He knew the area completely and loved his job and sharing his knowledge about it with thousands of visitors during his career. He retired at the age of 70 and devoted his life to his creative art and his entire family. Jolene’s children and grandchildren were thought of as his own.

He is survived by Joelene, his wife of 18 years; children: Sarah Rose (James) Coesens and Levi James. He has 3 granddaughters: Ruby Mersadeis, Alexis Anne and Layla K; sister, Maggie Costigan. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Richard will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His work has just begun in the eternities. Love you Richard.
