Alden Black

Panguitch, Utah

R. Alden Black passed away July 26, 2017 in St. George, Utah. He was born September 14,1925 in Hurricane, Utah. He was the eldest of six children born to Rial and Kathleen Isom Black.

Alden grew up and attended high school in Hurricane. He married Mary A. Parkinson, his high school sweetheart, on October 23, 1944 in Hurricane, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized July 18, 1970 in the St. George Temple. Mary preceded him in death August 16, 2012.

Alden served in the US Army in Europe during World War II. Upon returning home, he attended Dixie College for two years and then transferred to Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree and, later, a Masters in Education Administration. The family moved to Panguitch, Utah in 1950 where Alden began teaching shop, science, and FFA. He continued a career in education, serving as principal for Panguitch Middle School and then Panguitch High School. Alden went on to serve as the Vocational Curriculum Director for Garfield County, retiring from that position in 1989.

In the summers, Alden worked for the US Forest Service and continued to work for them in his retirement. He enjoyed being in the mountains - hunting, fishing, camping, and searching every year for the best blue spruce for the family Christmas tree.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He worked hard and taught his children to do the same.

He is survived by his children: Kay Lynn (Theron) Roundy, Nampa, Idaho; Larry (Jayne) Black, Richfield, Utah; Mary Ann (Don) Adams, North Platte, Nebraska; and David (Fran) Black, St. George, Utah; siblings: LaRae Matheson, Laura Bennett and Richard Black; 14 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and two siblings.
