Rex Petersen

Rex B Petersen, 92, died in Centerfield, Utah on June 29, 2014, as a result of injuries received during an accident while driving his 1964 Jeep Wagoneer near the Skyline Drive in Manti Canyon. He was born on December 6, 1921, in Manti, and was the youngest son of John Hyrum and Bertha Stutznegger Petersen .
He married Shirley Marie Keller in 1946, who passed away in 1970. From that marriage, which was later solemnized in the Manti Temple, he had two children: James Rex (Janice) of Manti and Susan Dean (Jack Quintero) of San Marcos, California. He married Madalene Jolley in 1972 and became very close to her family: Clark, Kenneth (Pam), Patricia Hales (Don), Judy Allen (Paul) and Kris. Madalene passed away in 1998 Rex turned 20 on the day before Pearl Harbor was attacked and joined the Army Airforce shortly after that. He received training as an aircraft mechanic and served in the South Pacific in the Phillipines and New Guinea during WWII. After WWII he was re-activiated and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
For most of his life he worked as a mechanic, owning Rex’s Chevron in Manti. He is well known for his skill as a master mechanic, being able to fix virtually anything and is also well known for his hard work, honesty and integrity. He dearly loved his family and the mountains around the Manti area. He was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in a number of callings. He was a member of the Manti American Legion and The Manti Lions Club.
He has 28 grandchildren and numerous great, and great-great-grandchildren whom he loved all deeply and equally.
Rex was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers: John, Herman, Bill, and Glen; and sisters: Vera and Edna.
The family wishes to thank all of those invloved in helping Rex following his accident including the Sanpete County sherriffs’ officers and Sanpete Jeep Posse members. We also appreciated the extraordinary care he received from the staffs at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah, Sanpete Valley Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, Utah and the Centerfield Care Center in Centerfield, Utah.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 3, at 11:00 am in the Manti Stake Center, 555 East Union Street where friends may call Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Manti Cemetery with military rites by the Manti American Legion Post #36.
