DeVar married the love of his life, Kathleen Clarke on May 26, 1949 in Las Vegas. They were sealed in the St. George Temple on April 11, 1969. They had three daughters: Shelley Pollock, of Provo; Kristine and Donald Henderson, of Las Vegas; and Linda, deceased, and Ron Sims, of Phoenix. He was a beloved grandpa to their eight grandchildren.
After Kathleen’s death, he married Faye Palmer Ott on February 25, 1989. He was welcomed into the family by Faye’s four children: Marty and Ilene Ott, of Kanab; Gary and Carmen Ott, of Salt Lake; Kris and Dan Williams, of Beaver; and Kathy and Brent Chamberlin, of Kanab. Their 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren all who enjoyed the time they spent with him.
DeVar had a love for work. In his youth he did odd jobs such as taking cows to pasture, herding sheep, and working in the timber. As he grew older he moved to Salt Lake City and worked construction. Finally he found work that allowed him to stretch and grow his talents choosing a career with the National Park Service where he spent 35 years working his way up the ladder to Chief of Maintenance. He served as Chief of Maintenance at Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks.
DeVar is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in many different organizations and capacities. He served his country for many years in the National Guard, where he received an honorable discharge.
DeVar was known for the service and generosity he freely gave to others. He treasured his relationships with his extended family and friends. DeVar was never one to brag on his accomplishments, however, one of the things he felt proud of was his part in the reconstruction of the Tropic cemetery where he spent many pleasant hours of work.
DeVar was an avid outdoors man, loving to fish and hunt. His grandchildren know him as the best fisherman ever with a magic fishing pole.
He is also survived by his sister, Vertis (Lester) Clarke, sisters-in-law, Ethel (LaMar) LeFevre, and Erma Clarke.
The family would like to thank the owner and staff of Bel Aire Assisted Living in Orem for the kind loving care they provided him the last 15 months of his life.
