Owena Chappell
Lyman, UT
Our loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Owena Johansen Chappell of Lyman passed away peacefully at home on July 30, 2020, she was 93 years old.
Owena was born November 26, 1926, to Loa Arintha Taylor and Harold F. Johansen. She grew up in Loa, Utah and graduated from Wayne High School. Following High School she moved to Ogden to work and eventually met the love of her life, Jack R. Chappell of Lyman, Utah. She knew him but he didn't know her. He had heard that a young woman from Wayne County was working at Walgreens so he went there to meet her. She served him an extra scoop of ice cream in his malt and, even though that got his attention, it nearly got her fired. They were married on April 1, 1948 in the Manti Temple and recently celebrated their 72 anniversary.
Together they raised five children. They started their life in Lyman, then moved to Orem, Utah for many years but came "home" to Lyman. Owena was a homemaker but also worked as a lunch lady at Wayne High when her children were older. She also enjoyed working for the U.S. Forest Service in the Fishlake District for many years.
Owena was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. Jack and Owena served a one year mission to the Atlanta, Georgia temple in 1990. They loved their time there, the many people they met and the long time friendships they made.
Owena was a fun loving, spunky woman with a great sense of humor. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Each one was made to feel like they were her favorite.
Owena is survived by her husband, Jack; children, Paul J. Chappell; Charmaine (Ross) Childs; Kirk (Jean) Chappell; Clark (Kathy) Chappell; Faun (Skip) Jackson; with 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Owena is also survived by a sister, Wana Lu Burr of Burrville, Ut; and a brother JR (Deanna) Johansen of Huntsville, Utah.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Emil Johansen, Arden Johansen, Larry Johansen; sister, Lella Vee Sisam and a grandchild, Holly Chappell.
