Nyle J. Matthews, 86, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2018 in Monroe. He was born on December 17, 1931 in Liberty, Idaho to Jesse and Eva Hymas Matthews.

Nyle grew up on a sheep ranch and loved working with animals, leading him to study Agriculture at Utah State University. He left the University to serve an LDS mission and in the Korean War. After returning to Utah State, he married Karen Ashman in the Logan Temple on July 1, 1958. Nyle graduated from Utah State University with a master’s degree and went to work for the USU Extension Service. This afforded them many opportunities to travel in the U.S., Bolivia, Africa and Russia. Nyle was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings. In retirement he was honored to be a temple worker at the Manti Temple.

Nyle and Karen have five children: Julie (Dennis) Meldrum, Lori Brinkerhoff, Sheryl Matthews, Michael (Tiffany) Matthews and Jennifer (Thomas) Baker; 13 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Nyle loved being with family, traveling, woodworking, gardening, serving in the church and making people laugh. He was an intelligent, funny and generous man who is remembered most for his acts of kindness and service. He provided his family, neighbors and friends with vegetables from his garden, cookies from his kitchen, furniture from his wood shop and service from his heart.

Preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Brad Brinkerhoff; and his 6 siblings.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Magleby Mortuary Chapel in Richfield, where the Matthews family will receive friends Friday even between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, and again Saturday between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at the Richfield City Cemetery with military honors by the V.F.
