Muriel Mathis
Monroe, Utah
Muriel Cannon Mathis, 95, passed away at the home of her daughter in West Valley City on August 31, 2020 as the result of a fall and years-long struggle with dementia. Muriel was born into a loving home, the fifth child of Raymond and Elizabeth Matilda "Mattie" Truman Cannon. A child of the depression with her roots firmly planted in the red soil of St. George, she was proud of growing up on the street with the only sidewalk in town. She worked as a secretary for many years and was known for her spelling and people skills. With a can-do attitude she survived Thyroid Cancer at 38. She was frugal and loved shopping and finding deals—not wanting to spend more than a few dollars on the clothes she wore. She was immaculate in her appearance and took great pride in her home and yards in Monroe where she lived for 69 years.
Her mother passed away just prior to her marriage to Dayne Mathis and she had a loving relationship with her in-laws, Gordon and Paula. Dayne and Muriel grew up in the same neighborhood and were married 72 years prior to his passing.
Her family was her pride and joy. The grandchildren will always remember her mean game of Scrabble, her freezer always stocked with ice cream and Otter Pops, and the PINK BUNNY. She was generous with her time serving her church and community. She was the first woman elected to the city council in Monroe and she undertook the cemetery renovation like it was her own yard, not only donating her time but her small salary back to the city. She served faithfully at the side of her husband when he was bishop and as an assistant matron in the Manti Temple. She loved teaching Gospel Doctrine and serving in the various other organizations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She was greeted at the veil by her husband Dayne; her mother, father, and in-laws. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories and her children: Christine (RK) Nielson, Monroe; Robert (Annette) Mathis, Alamosa, CO; John (Wendy) Mathis, Vernal; and Pauline (Lenard) Barney, West Valley City; 18 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren: in-laws: Cleo Mathis, Dick Mathis, Dan Shumtz.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Florence (Justin) Lamb, Truman (Virginia) Cannon, Josephine (Lynn) Crook, Helen (Tony) Madsen, Aileen Schmutz; in-laws: Jack Mathis, Ferris Mathis; and great-granddaughter, Juliette Mathis.
She loved people and her association with them and believe that chocolate was its own food group! It is agreed that she was the BEST GRANDMA ever.
The family wishes to thank all the care givers at Legacy Village Memory Care and Sandra Baldwin for the loving care extended as her health declined.
