Mildred Gates
Escalante/Kaysville
Mildred Liston Gates, 91, passed away December 12, 2013, in Kaysville. She was born November 9, 1922 in Beaver to Frank and Mayme Oakden Liston. She grew up in Escalante. Her mother died when she was eight years old, and after her father’s death four years later, she was raised in the home of her aunt and uncle, Andrew and Isabell Spencer. On May 16, 1946, she married her childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Lynn Gates, in the St. George Temple. He preceded her in death May 3, 2007.
Mildred graduated from Brigham Young University and began her teaching career at Escalante Elementary. She was the first and second grade teacher at Escalante Elementary for 36 years. After her retirement in 1983, she and Lynn spent the next 22 years living in Mesa, Arizona during the winter and Escalante in the summer. They moved to Kaysville in 2004 to be close to their daughter and necessary medical services for Lynn. She taught in the classroom and also taught by example. She loved her students, her friends, and her family. We will all miss her.
She is survived by her daughter, Terry (James) Dowdle, Layton; granddaughters: Emily (Bart) Boren, Judith (Trent) Sweat, Jamie Dowdle; grandsons, Ryan (Katherine) Dowdle, and Nathan (Erin) Dowdle; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; sister-in-law, Jan Liston.
Also preceded in death by parents; brother, Stanley; Aunt Isabell and Uncle Andrew Spencer; and two of their children whom she considered her sister and brother, Thelma Spencer Cottam and Vernon Spencer.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the Escalante 1st Ward Chapel, where friends may call 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. B urial will be in the Escalante Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
