Mike Reno

June 8, 1941 — August 1, 2014

Michael "Mike" William Reno, 73, passed away, August 1, 2014, in Annabella, after a valiant and courageous battle with a long, drawn out illness. He had been tenderly cared for by his wife, who loved him dearly and surrounded in the days previous by his children.

Mike was born June 8, 1941 in Hayward, California to William "Bill" Nazzaro Reno and Thelma Vernessa Reno (Rogers). He graduated from Hayward High School in 1958, Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University. In 1960, he married the former Susie Anne Hodgkins in Castro Valley, California. They were sealed in the Oakland Temple in 1966. They were married for twenty 28 years, had five children together and later divorced. Mike was sealed to Elizabeth "Liz" Gunner in 1989 in the Salt Lake City Temple and enjoyed 10 years of wonderful companionship with her, before her untimely death from cancer in 1999. He married Christine Marie Poe in Manti, Utah, December 29, 1999. They experienced 15 years of blissful adventure and happiness together.

Mike served in the USCG from 1959 – 1963 and was honorably discharged after serving aboard the U.S.C.G.C Ingham. During his career he was a police officer for the Fremont, CA Police Department, a Sergeant for the Tiburon, CA Police Department, an Special Agent for both the IRS and the EPA, and Probation Officer for the Juvenile Court System of Sevier County, UT. He was a deeply devoted life long civil servant.

During his younger years, Mike was actively involved in all levels of the Boy Scouts of America scouting program. He diligently helped many young men earn merit badges and work towards becoming an Eagle Scout. His love of scouting was developed at an early age, as his father and older brother were both intensely involved in scouting. Mike’s mom was a Den Mother to both of her sons and many other young boys. Growing up in Mike’s household as a child, scouting was a family experience. He dearly enjoyed the outdoors and taking long rides, while enjoying beautiful scenery. Some Sunday afternoon rides started with the simple question, "I wonder where this road leads?" His entire life, he liked to camp and in his later years, he enjoyed riding his ATV, with Christine, in the mountains and trails of Utah. He and Christine served as Camp Ground Hosts at multiple State Parks in Arizona and Utah.

Mike was actively involved in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings and enjoyed teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to others. His love of teaching the gospel, led to him reading many different books to prepare for Sunday lessons and to quench his thirst for knowledge regarding the Savior and His ministry. Amongst his service in the church, Mike served as a temple worker in the Manti Utah Temple. He truly enjoyed serving others while he served in the Lord’s house. He was guided by his faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and diligently strived to teach his children, family members and others to do the same.

Mike also had a love for classical music and opera. He learned this love from his parents whose home always had beautiful music playing to set the tone for the day or any family get together. In his own home, Mike enjoyed turning up the volume and letting the bass vibrate the walls and floors while he sat back and enjoyed listening to the moving melody wind through the tender notes of the beautiful music.

Although his life ended early, Mike enjoyed an abundantly full life blessed with the love of his family, finding fulfillment through serving his community and church, achieving satisfaction through helping wayward youth find their way back to paths that would bring them true happiness and contentment with the companionship of his wife, Christine, and dearly beloved dog, Daisy May.
