Mary Louise Sorensen
Mayfield, Utah
On May 19, 2023, the precious daughter of J. Ray and Lucille McPherson Munk passed away at Mission at Community Living in Centerfield. Mary Louise was born August 25, 1925 in Manti. After 97 years of creating wonderful family memories, enduring challenging health issues, and refining creative talents, she has been reunited with her sweetheart, Neil H. Sorensen, who preceded her in death on December 29, 2008. They were married May 22, 1946 in the Manti Temple and had five children who honor, cherish and appreciate the many sacrifices and services throughout her life.
Mary Louise graduated from Manti High School in May of 1943. She graduated from Snow College in 1945, attended BYU, Utah State and taught 2nd grade in Manti.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mary Louise lived her testimony through her service. She served in all the Church organizations and especially loved teaching the youth and directing them in plays, road shows and musicals.
She loved her friends and neighbors. She mixed her talents with her hobbies in meaningful activities. She enjoyed writing — poetry, short stories, one-act plays, even a 3-act musical. She and her daughter, Linda, published a history of Mayfield.
She loved painting in oils, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She and Neil loved to travel, camp and fish at Twelve Mile Canyon and vacation on their boat at Lake Powell.
Neil and Mary Louise spent two summers as senior missionaries at Cove Fort. They held Family Home Evenings at the Gunnison prison for over 10 years. She served on the Sanpete County Welfare Board, Utah Farms Bureau, Women’s Committee and secretary of the Utah Cowbells. She belonged to the Artists Club in Gunnison and the Ladies Literary Club in Mayfield. Sanpete County Farm Bureau honored the Sorensen family with the Distinguished Service Award in February of 2008.
Mary Louise is survived by her children: Linda (Que) Miller, Lee N (Tina) Sorensen; daughter-in-law, Denice Sorensen; 14 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren with 1 more on the way; sister-in-law, Donna Munk.
