Mary Hummel "Mrs. Hummel"
Richfield, UT
Mary Evlyn McMillan Hummel passed away peacefully in her home on July 6, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born March 4, 1923 in Sigurd, Utah to John Brown & Anna Lucile Crane McMillan; Mary was their only child and dearly beloved daughter.
Mary grew up and attended elementary school in Sigurd and secondary school in Richfield. Mary graduated from Richfield High School in 1941 where she was active in speech, drama and dance.
Mary attended Scripts College in California and the University of Utah. She graduated from the U of U with honors in 1945.
Mary married the love of her life, Clarence Floyd Hummel, with whom she spent 58 years creating happy memories together. They were married on December 22, 1956 in Price, Utah.
Mary began her teaching career at Ashman Elementary school in Richfield and later taught school in Colorado, Arizona, Georgia, Delaware, Iowa and Texas. She returned to finish her teaching career in Richfield. She retired after 31 years of teaching in 1987. Mary taught every grade except kindergarten and finished her teaching career in English, speech and charm. Hundreds of students came to love "Mrs. Hummel" and felt of her love and concern for them.
Mary's interest in children and education was life long. Mary loved writing and participated in the Utah Writing Projects in Cedar City and Logan. Mary was a brilliant writer; she wrote hundreds of personalized poems in which she eulogized friends and strengthened their families with her words. After retiring from teaching, Mary worked as a consultant for Sevier School District, Utah State University and the Utah State Office of Education.
Although she loved teaching, Mary's greatest love was her family. She is survived by her husband, Floyd and leaves a tremendous legacy through her children: Becky (Craig) Ross, Richfield; Jacky Ferrell (Terry Mascher), St. George; John (Sheila) Hummel, St. George; and Mac (Kamie) Hummel, Tulsa, OK. She is also survived by her 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Hanna.
Mary was happiest when she was surrounded by her loving family. Each of her children and grandchildren remember how difficult it was for her to say good-bye. Mary's compassion and love touched many generations of students; her influence will stretch into the eternities. Mary was deeply loved and will be forever remembered.
A very special thanks to Monroe Canyon Assisted Living Center for their loving care of Mom.
