Marshall Sorenson

Gunnison, Utah

Marshall Elwood Sorenson, 70, passed away December 30, 2018, surrounded by family at his bedside at the Gunnison Valley Hospital in Gunnison, Utah. He was born April 7, 1948 in Salina, Utah to H. Elwood and Nathella Ann Christensen Sorenson. He was the oldest of four children.

Marshall was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served two years in the Hill Cumorah Mission. After his mission he married Rita Kay Hill, December 20, 1969. They lived in Sandy, Utah with their three children where he worked driving truck for Rocky Mountain Produce. They later divorced.

Marshall moved to Gunnison to work as the produce manager for about 30 years. He loved his job at the Market and enjoyed visiting with the local people every day. Many who shopped there remember hearing Marshall whistling and singing his heart out to his favorite oldies and hymns as he set out the produce. He always had an answer to any questions about fruits and veggies.

He married Ruth Ann Larsen Rosenvall on May 29, 1993 in the Manti Temple.

They made their home in Gunnison, Utah. The joy of his life was his family. He was always there to push the grandkids in the swing or a trip around the block in the little pink car. He loved having his family around him to share his veggies from his garden. He always looked forward to his trips to California to spend time with family in the pool and at Disneyland.

Helping his dad out on the farm was one of Marshall’s favorite pastimes. He loved talking about all things farming, riding his horse Babe, and setting out on his 4-wheeler to check the water level at the pond. He and his dad spent many lazy Saturday afternoons reminiscing life in the good-ol-days in "Dad’s Penthouse" on the farm. One of his favorite family activities was the annual pumpkin picking party at the farm. He was so excited to help each of his grandkids pick their pumpkin, no matter the size. He would help them weigh them and take them to the car. Throughout his life he has been active in many church callings including bishopric member, ward mission leader, and loved serving as an ordinance worker in the Manti Temple for several years.

Marshall was an active member of the Gunnison Valley community. He served in various positions in the Lions Club for 25 years and was a supporter of all activities. He was the grand marshall in the 4th of July Celebration this past summer.

Marshall is survived by his wife, Ruth; children: Melodee (Gary) Leavitt, Matthew (Carilee) Sorenson, Marcus (Jill) Sorenson, Emily Miller, Nichole (Chris) Jensen, Nicholas (Meredith) Rosenvall, Michael (Connie) Rosenvall, 24 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; siblings: Kathy (Ted) Christensen, Denise (Donald) Hill, Paul (Tyran) Sorenson; step-mother, Julia Sorenson and her children: Christine (Milton) Johnson, Tamara (Vic) Petersen, Dorothy (Carl) James, JoLyn Chappell & Noni Dalton.
