Laurie Coon

Cannonville, Utah

Laurella Dea Thompson Holley Coon, 90, passed away in her sleep on January 10, 2019 in Provo, Utah. Laurie was the youngest of seven children born to Joseph Wallace and Rachel Wilson Thompson in Cannonville, Utah.

As a child, she developed a deep love for the outdoors, especially the red rocks of southern Utah. Laurie also developed a lifelong love for knowledge and learning. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Elementary Education and a minor in music. She served in the Central States Mission for the LDS Church from 1949-1950. On August 10, 1951, she married Elmer LeRoy Holley in the Manti Temple. He preceded her in death in 1953. They had one daughter, Karmen, who also preceded her in death in 2014.

Laurie worked as a schoolteacher in the Bryce Valley area and as postmaster at Bryce Canyon National Park and Tropic, Utah. In 1973, she was the first woman elected as mayor of Cannonville, a position she held for twelve years.

In 1985, Laurie married Theron Coon. Together, they served in the Georgia Macon Mission, Nauvoo Visitor Center Mission, and two service missions in Washington state (Zion’s Camp and Vashon Island). Laurie held a deep love for the gospel of Jesus Christ. She demonstrated her devotion through the service and love she extended to all around her. We will miss her hugs, smile, wisdom, and her beautiful presence.

She is survived by her grandchildren: Michael (Heidi), Jenny (Shelly), Jonathan (Kylie), and Tiffany; and her four great-grandchildren Marcus, Ian, Zo¸, and Rowan.
