Lamont D. Heyer, known by his family and friends as Monty, age 80, originally of Denver, CO, died April 23, 2017, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, in his home at La Vida Mission Viejo in Southern CA. Monty was born April 14, 1937, in Colorado Springs, CO, to Hadley and Mamie Heckathorn Heyer.

Monty attended Alameda High School and as a senior was class president. Monty was an excellent student and earned a Colorado State scholarship enabling him to go on to college, the first in his family to do so. He graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1959. During college, Monty elected to go through ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corp) and following graduation received a commission in the Army Corp of Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served 2 years active duty as an officer in the Army Signal Corp before receiving an honorable discharge in 1961.

Monty married Gretchen A. Van Sant on June 14, 1959 , whom he had first met in high school, following his graduation from college. As mentioned in his book, Memories of Lamont "Monty" Heyer, written for the benefit of his grandchildren, "it was the best decision of my lifetime".

Monty worked as an Aerospace Engineer at Hughes Aircraft in Culver City, CA for 31 years during which time he spent 5 of those years working on the radar system to the F14 Tomcat Fighter. He described this project as his most memorable work accomplishment. He retired in 1992 where he and Gretchen enjoyed golf, tennis, skiing and travel, living in Palm Springs, CA; Peoria, AZ; and Laguna Woods, CA.

Monty is survived by his wife, Gretchen; son, Scott (Stephanie) Heyer; grandchildren: Nikki (Blake) Heyer-Borg, Nathan "Nate" (Corinne) Heyer and Neil Heyer; great-grandson, Dean Borg, and soon-to-be born great-grandson (May 2017), Aaron Heyer.
