Karen Mangelson Calaway, passed away at her home from post surgical complications and was reunited with her Heavenly Father on July 8, 2015, her 71st birthday, in Sandy, Utah. She was born on July 8, 1944 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Austin and Ruby Rasmussen Mangleson. She was the 2 nd oldest of 7 children. A 1962 graduate from Olympus High School, she went on to receive a bachelors and master’s degree from BYU in Child Development. Karen married George Hughston in June 1964 in the Salt Lake Temple, together they had 5 children and later divorced.

Karen married Jim Calaway, August 5, 1982 in the Jordan River Temple. They were preparing to celebrate their 33 rd anniversary this year.

Karen had a successful career as a social worker for LDS Social Services and later did adoptions on her own. Over the years she has placed over 700 children with families, making dreams come true and touching the lives of so many young women.

She loved to run and completed several half marathons along with the St. George marathon. One of her favorite activities was to mix up a creation of goodness in her industrial sized hobart mixer and stay up all night baking for family, friends and neighbors. Karen also had a passion for the arts with dancing, theater, and music. Her talents were endless including quilting, cooking, writing, and an unbridled love for all she met. She loved camping and touring Utah on her ATV with her beloved husband Jim.

With a strong testimony of the Gospel, Karen loved her Savior, Jesus Christ. She and Jim were currently working at the Family History Library as service missionaries. She loved serving and helping others discover their ancestry.

Karen was most happy when spending time with her family. She adored her children and grandchildren and was always looking forward to creating more memories with them.

Survived by her husband, Jim; and children: Randy (Brenda), Allen, Dallas, Shane (Melissa), Jani (Charles); and step-children: Carl (Andrea), Tresha (Dave), Kim (Alyson), and Cory (Natalie); 34 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; siblings: Reid (Debbie), Marilyn, Ron (Karen), Nadine, Jerry (Geal). Preceded in death by parents; grandson, Jared; brother, Kenny. Jim loved his wife deeply and he will miss her greatly.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday July 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Quail Hollow Ward, 9245 Quail Run Drive, Sandy, 84093, where friends may call on Monday evening from 6 to 8 or on Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30. Burial will be in the Monroe City Cemetery Tuesday afternoon at 4:30. Funeral Directors Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
