Juel Maxwell "Mac" Yates, 98, passed away August 20, 2016 in Gunnison, UT. Mac was born July 11, 1918 in Lake Point, UT to James Maxwell and Mary Jessamine Shandrew Yates. He attended a two room school in Lake Point until 1930, when students were bused to Grantsville, where he graduated from high school in 1936.

Mac married Gloria Ruth Peterson, September 6, 1964. Their marriage was solemnized November 17, 1984 in the Jordan River Temple.

Mac served in WWII as a security guard at Remington Arms in Salt Lake City 1941-43, as a motorcycle patrolman at the Hanford Nuclear Reactor Site in Richland, WA 1943-44. From 1944-47 he was a tank mechanic and tank commander at Ft. Benning, GA. From 1947-49 he was in the U.S. Army Reserve and from 1949-51 he was again on active duty at Camp Cook, CA, servicing, testing and shipping tanks to Korea. He was honorably discharged in November of 1951.

Mac worked as an auto mechanic, service manager and auto body shop manager in the Salt Lake City area from 1951-1991. Mac and Gloria moved to Gunnison, UT in 2008.

Mac had a very kind and generous heart, and a quick sense of humor. He was loved and will be missed by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; sister-in-law, Diane P. Funk, both of Gunnison, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mac was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Oswald, Zell, Lyman and Ula.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 12:30 p.m. in the Gunnison Cemetery with military honors by the Gunnison American Legion Post #104 and the Utah Honor Guard. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
