John Charles "JC" Swindle

Provo, Utah

On June 8, 2013, our loving father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather John Charles Swindle, 83, passed away peacefully from the effects of Alzheimer’s, surrounded by family. He was born October 6, 1929 in Monroe to Charles Emil and Hazel Robinson Swindle. He was the sixth of ten children His father passed away when John was only four years old. Shortly thereafter his mother gave birth to her tenth child . The child did not survive and for some time it was feared that his mother would not survive either. But survive she did and rose magnificently to the challenge of raising and providing for her family alone during those difficult Depression years. Working six days a week as Sevier County Recorder and still managing to care for her family's needs as well.

John inherited her work ethic and determination to give one's best effort to any task large or small. His children frequently meet people who share stories of working with John in his religious, civic or professional roles, affirming the fact that John never failed to give his best.

He married Sharon Buchanan  on August 6, 1956 for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple.

John was a graduate of South Sevier High School's illustrious class of '47. He attended the University of Utah on scholarship, worked full time to send home money, and graduated Summa Cum Laude. John taught for several years in the Salt Lake School District, and then went on to spend most of his career in the insurance industry as both an agent and state manager. He went into insurance in an attempt to help others avoid the difficult effects his family faced as a result of his father's early death. John was also an active civic leader throughout his life, serving as president of Sertoma and as chairman of the Freedom Festival Parade.

Always a missionary in his heart, John had a strong testimony of the LDS Church, serving in many capacities over the years. He served as a missionary in the Central States Mission, and a CES mission with his wife in Nashville, Tennessee. The years John spent serving as bishop of a BYU student ward and the many lifelong friends he made were very dear to his heart. He also enjoyed his scouting experiences and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver award. Those who knew him loved him dearly, and he will be greatly missed.

John is survived by his wife, Sharon; and their nine children: Jon (Liz) Swindle, Shane (Carol) Swindle, Stacey (Kelly) Shepherd, Stuart (Sara) Dalton, Stephenie Swindle, Seth (Rebecca) Swindle, Jeremy (Rebecca) Swindle, Alison (Michael) Whiting, and Sara Swindle, as well as many "borrowed" children who lived with the family at different times. John and Sharon have twenty-seven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; two of his sisters, Shirley (Stan) Feulner and Yvonne (Max) Bastian, and one brother Max (Cleva) Swindle.

John looked forward to getting to know his father, and his family takes comfort in the knowledge that he is reunited with his mother, father, brothers: Emil and Keith; and sisters: Maurine Davis, LaVee Ogden, and Rae Hodson.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday June 12, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the Hillside LDS Chapel in Provo, 1960 N. 1500 E., where friends may call from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. The family will also be available to visit after the service.
