John L Olcott

Orem, Utah

John LaMar Olcott, 91, passed away October 14, 2014 in Orem, Utah. He was born to a loving family on July 29, 1923 in Clear Creek Canyon, Utah. This loving family, who are all now deceased, included his parents: Robert Agustus and Ina May Merchant Olcott; brother, Robert Leon (Marjorie) Olcott; sisters: Lila May (Orin) Tanner, Maida Alverta (Gardner) Heaps, Virginia Ione (Scott) Ogden and Golda (Lloyd) Hunt.

His children include: Mary Dawn Olcott Fallon, Ashland, Oregon; Robin Lee McCaffery Smith (deceased), Michael James (Linda) McCaffery, Timothy Patrick McCaffery--all of Utah, along with 6 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

After graduating from South Sevier High School in Monroe, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943-1946. After the military, he moved to San Francisco, where he had a successful career in the grocery business as a manager, supervisor, and store owner.

During retirement, John and Betty loved to travel and move until his wife suffered a stroke. John moved them to American Fork, where he became an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and received his temple endowment among a loving bevy of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

After Betty’s death, John moved to the Seville and later to the Summerfield Retirement Community in Orem. When he started losing his eyesight, he attended the Palo Alto School for the Blind and acquired many tools to make life more enjoyable.

John loved his family. He looked forward to his visits in Oregon to be with his lovely daughter, Dawn, and her semi-annual visits to Utah to see him. He loved Betty’s kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Mike and Linda McCaffery have been especially attentive, loving, and supportive during his decline. He loved his nieces and nephews, and seemed always to attract friends with his genial, friendly nature. We love him, will miss him, and look forward to being reunited with him.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Magleby Mortuary, 50 South 100 West, where friends may call Saturday afternoon from 12:30 to 1:30.
