He grew up in various areas of southern California and graduated high school in 1962. In 1965, me married Marianne Gemsa. They divorced in 1975.
He met Claudia Fritz in 1980 - their first date was May 24, 1980 and they were married on July 11, 1980 in Las Vegas, Nevada. John began adoption proceedings for Claudia’s 2 minor daughters, Tisha and Jamie, in 1981 and it was finalized in 1984. They were then sealed for time and eternity on July 20, 1996. Their marriage on this earth lasted 36 years, 9 months, 14 days.
His earlier occupation was working with Fender Guitar. From there, he began his career with the United States Forest Service at the Angeles National Forest as an equipment operator on a seasonal basis. After a couple seasons, he was hired full time as a engineering technician and stayed with the Forest Service the rest of his working life.
With the Angeles National Forest, he worked temporary assignments at other forests around southern California. In 1991, he transferred to the White River National Forest in Colorado. He and his wife lived in Minturn, Colorado on the Forest Service compound until they moved to Gypsum in 1995 to build their first home together. He retired from the White River in January 2002 and moved to Sigurd, Utah to build their second home on approximately 17 acres. In 2015, John and Claudia sold their home and approximately 3 acres and built their third home together on another part of their original acreage.
In 2005, they took their truck and trailer and camped their way across the country, visiting one of Claudia’s nieces in South Carolina, then headed back to Utah, taking 5-1/2 weeks total. In 2016, they headed east again with John’s sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Brian, and visited different early church sites, taking another 3-1/2 weeks. They spent many mini-vacations around the western part of the country - North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and Bryce Canyon. John was known to suggest driving down to Ruby’s Inn just for lunch. He and Claudia had an amazing life together.
They are now waiting for the “second part” of their amazing life together to begin.
