Joan Loraine Smith Munk passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Centerfield on Tuesday, September 10, 2019. Joan was born on July 15, 1949 in Los Angeles, California. Her parents, Oscar Dale and Shirley Christensen Peterson settled in Sterling, Utah, in which they bought a house and made it a home. She grew up in a yard filled with beautiful flowers. Her love of flora and fauna inspired and ignited her creativity and she made beautiful spaces everywhere she lived.

Joan accomplished many things throughout her life, but she would be the first to tell you her biggest accomplishments were marrying her husband of 47 years, Ivan Clair Munk, and raising her four children: Shawn, TerriLynn, Wayne and Clair Ann. Ivan and Joan taught their kids all about the wonders of nature, how to love the outdoors and the art of fishing. They frequently took their family on countless outdoor adventures, creating precious memories that will never be forgotten.

Everyone who knew Joan, knew how much she loved her family and beyond that, how much she loved music. Most of us like music, but Joan carried it in her soul and it infused her with something extraordinary. She always had a song in her heart as music was a constant companion. Joan performed at countless weddings and funerals and at numerous nursing home functions. The music she loved spoke to you. It spoke about life- its joys, trials, humor, love and so much more. Her music continuously soothed and touched so many hearts when words failed to.

A wonderful and loving wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma, Joan loved her children with her whole heart, but was completely devoted to her grandchildren. The gift of charity was manifested in the purposeful way she lived every day. Every kind deed or act of service was a gift from the heart and window into the gentle, kind nature of her soul. To all who have known her, it is clear that Joan was unique among God's children.

Joan will be truly missed but the kindness and grace she brought to this world will ripple through our lives forever. She will be joining her husband and parents.

Funeral services will be held Monday September 16, 2019 at 12:00 Noon in the Centerfield Ward Chapel, where friends may call from 10:00 to 11:30 am, prior to services. Joan will be deeply missed by her family and friends. But we know she is fishing in heaven right now with her sweetheart.
