Jerry C. Roundy, 87, died November 17, 2018 in Panguitch, Utah. He was born June 5, 1931 to Wallace N. and Ella Mae Roundy in Escalante Utah. He grew up in Escalante, and graduated from Escalante High School, where he was student body vice president and active in all sports.
Jerry entered the U. S. Navy in 1950 and served aboard two aircraft carriers, the USS Valley Forge and the USS Essex, during the Korean War. After being discharged from the Navy he was called to serve an LDS mission to the Eastern States, with headquarters in New York City. Upon completion of his mission he enrolled in Brigham Young University, where he met and married Colleen Marrott, from Pleasant Grove, Utah in the Salt Lake Temple on September 11, 1957. They became the parents of four children, Melanie (Klay) Kunz, Kaysville; Maria (Gordon) Hudson, Syracuse; Scott (Jan) Roundy, Escalante; Alana (Bret) Lange, Nibley. Colleen preceded him in death February 25, 1985.
Jerry received a BS, a MS and a PhD from Brigham Young University in Western American History. In 1965 he began his teaching career in Ashton, Idaho as the principal of the LDS Seminary there. After five years in Ashton he became chairman of the religion department at the Church College of Hawaii (now BYU-Hawaii). After six years in Hawaii he joined the religion faculty at Rick College (Now BYU-Idaho), where he served a term as department chairman. He also taught part-time at BYU and taught two semesters at the BYU Center in Jerusalem as well as two semesters in Nauvoo at the Joseph Smith Academy, while the Nauvoo Temple was under construction.
During his tenure at Church College of Hawaii he was chosen Professor of the Year two consecutive years, and at Ricks College he received the Ricks College Distinguished Teaching Award in 1981. He had a long and distinguished teaching career in the LDS Church Education System, and in 2010 he received the Ricks College Distinguished Alumni Award.
Upon retirement in 1993 he was called to serve as mission president of the California Sacramento Mission, serving from 1993 to 1996. His service to the Church includes: Elders Quorum president, temple ordinance worker, stake executive secretary, bishop, counselor in a stake presidency, high councilor, mission president and various other jobs in the Auxiliaries. He has also been active in civic functions, including the Veterans’s Memorial in 2004; and the Escalante Heritage Center.
On May 16, 1986 he married Sherree Schow Spencer and gained three step-children: Darrel (Rose) Spencer, Michelle (Barry) Peterson, and Evan (Kathy) Spencer.
He leaves a wife; 4 children; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also 3 step- children, 10 step-grandchildren, and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
Also preceded in death by parents; siblings: Glade (Gladys) Roundy, Floyd (Mila) Roundy, Edna Mae (Jimmy) Smith, Vivian (Evelyn) Roundy, Bud Roundy, Wavie (Ralph) Siple, Betty (Smith) Alvey.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 23, 2018 at 12:00 Noon in the Escalante 2nd Ward. Friends may call Friday at the church from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Military honors will be provided by the Escalante American Legion Post #0114.
