Jane Winkel

Payson, Utah

Jane Marie Peterson Winkel, 80, passed away July 9, 2019 in Payson due to complications of Alzheimer’s. She was born March 22, 1939 in Richfield to J. Orean and Dot Leila Christensen Peterson. In 1958 she married Jack Francis Winkel in Richfield. In 1964, she and Jack were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti Utah Temple.

Jane grew up in Richfield and graduated from Richfield High School in 1957. She attended Snow College for one year before marrying Jack. She worked as a telephone operator for 8 years. Jane was a born leader and she honed her leadership skills in the Jaycee-ettes serving as president in 1967-68 where they, along with the Jaycees won many awards on a state level including first place in the Parade of Cities. She and her husband were also delegates from Utah at the National Jaycee Convention.

In 1969, the family moved to Salt Lake City where Jack attended the University of Utah. Jane was the bread winner for two years while Jack was in school full time. Upon graduation the family moved to Texas where Jack had accepted a position as a geophysicist with Mobil Oil.

Through several moves back and forth between Dallas and Houston, Jane's full leadership potential developed. She was made Stake Primary president of the Houston Stake and held the position for three years. Upon her release, she was called as Relief Society president. She served as Relief Society president for a total of 10 years in four different wards.

Upon Jack's retirement, they moved back to Utah to be closer to family. They built a home in Alpine, Utah. In retirement they enjoyed trips to New Zealand, Hong Kong, Thailand and Alaska. They also enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Fish Lake.

She and Jack served as ordinance workers in the Provo Temple and later the Mt. Timpanogos Temple. Jane served for two years working with the brides on Saturday mornings, which she loved.

In 2003, they downsized to a new home in Payson. In 2011, they bought a small winter home in Mesquite, NV. They enjoyed seven winters there, but with failing health the move became too difficult. Jack did his best to take care of Jane. She spent her last few months receiving memory care assistance at the Beehive Home in Payson. The family would like to thank the neighbors, ward members, and the Beehive and hospice staff for their loving care and assistance.

Jane had a strong testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ and served others with love and kindness. She adored her grandchildren and loved asking them about their lives.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years; children: Lora (Doug) Draper, Jeff (Monique), and Jerry (Anna); 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; siblings: Sheri Schetselaar and Max Peterson.
