James Hill

Gunnison, UT

James A. Hill, 73, of Gunnison passed away peacefully on January 13th, 2018. James fought a valiant battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family and loved ones. His wife, Loretta Mellor Hill, preceded him in death in 2004. He is survived by his 12 children (their spouses), 30 grandchildren, 2 great grand children, 2 brothers and a sister.

Family and faith guided his life. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony of the gospel; which included serving a 2 year mission to Ireland.

Hard work, generosity, openness, forgiveness, positive thinking, and commitment to life-long learning were his hallmarks. He led by example. At age 69, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Utah Valley University.

His professional career included 22 years at the Waterford School in Sandy, and 7 years as a correctional officer in Gunnison--fulfilling a life-long dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. At age 63, he completed training and certification at the Police Academy, the oldest person to do so in the state's history.

His talents and skills as a carpenter and builder were evidenced in many projects, particularly in the design and construction of the Sarah B. Hill family cabin in Fayette on the site of his grandparents home.

He will be missed and remembered for his loving nature and capacity for forgiveness. His legacy of kindness, generosity and lifelong tenacity lives on through his family. He will be missed dearly.
