Irma Sorensen Gunnison, Utah Irma Rachel Mellor Sorensen, 86, passed away January 7, 2015 in Centerfield, Utah. She was born in Manti on July 5, 1928 to Warren Rex and Rachel Peterson Mellor. She was the oldest of 10 children. Irma was schooled in Fayette and graduated from Gunnison Valley High School. She attended BYU until she had to return home to care for her mother. Irma married Bernard Mortimer Sorensen on May 24, 1949 in the Manti LDS Temple. They raised seven sons and one daughter, working side by side in their family farming operation. She was a hard worker and taught her children to do the same. She retired from the US Postal Service after 25 years. Irma was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She started teaching Primary as a teenager and was active in the scouting program, earning the Silver Beaver award for 25 years of service. She loved to attend the temple. She was proud of her pioneer heritage and was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers since she was 16. Irma was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was proud that her sons earned their eagle scout awards and served missions. She attended all major events and school plays of her grandchildren. She was very proud of their accomplishments. She would light up when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren would come to visit her. Irma is survived by her sons: Morris (Sherry), Sherwin (Debra), Lane (Loreen), all of Gunnison; Len (Sheryl), Moab; Jarvis (Pauline), Wayne (Ann), and Kevin (Amy), also of Gunnison; daughter, LuAnn (Robert) Bennett, Ferron; 31 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren; siblings: Ashel (Faye) Mellor, Cora Mellor, both of Ogden; LaPriel (LeRoy) Soderquist, Opal Scriver, both of Salt Lake; Letha Williamson, Las Cruses, NM; Greta Mellor, Provo; Charles (Ora May) Mellor, Nephi; Willma (Gordon) Talbot, Arlington, VA; sister-in-law, Doreen Anderson, Gunnison. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Hale (Darla) Mellor; brothers-in-law: Edward Williams, James Scriver, Edward Anderson; sister-in-law: Elnora Hosac. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gunnison 3rd Ward Chapel, 80 West Center, where friends may call Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Gunnison City Cemetery.
