Irene Gardner
Richfield, Utah
Irene Hinckley Gardner, formally of Richfield passed away December 23, 2024 in Washington City, at the age of 93. Born April 30, 1931 in Springville. She lived in Salem but later moved to the avenues in Salt Lake. Irene was blessed with a sharp mind and was able to graduate from East High school at the age of 16. After graduating she completed BYU’s nursing program.
She married Jay Fenton Gardner of Delta, in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 5, 1950. They lived in Delta, Utah for two years before moving to Richfield where they stayed for over 50 years.
Irene excelled in her role of homemaker. She was an amazing cook whose homemade bread, scones, and caramels couldn’t be beat. Her sewing skills were impressive. She made anything from dresses to three piece lined suits, and could tailor and mend any type of fashion. Many days she could be found ironing her husband’s white shirts. She was gifted in needle work, such as knitting, crocheting, and embroidery. She showed great strength through the trials of losing three of her five children.
She was able to accompany her husband on motor home trips all over the country. Throughout most of her adult life she was plagued with the pain of a failed back surgery. This truly was a struggle to bare.
Irene was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and always shared her strong testimony. She was blessed to be able to serve for years in the Manti Temple alongside her husband.
After her husband’s health declined in 2003, they moved from their beloved home in Richfield to the St. George area to be closer to family.
She is survived by her children: Oralin (Michael P) Smith, Beaver; Barbara (Bradley M) Thompson, Bluebell; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; brother, Ira Lee Hinckley, Elk Ridge.
