Helma Richards Haas, 95, passed away on November 10, 2018 in Tropic, Garfield, UT. She was born on November 2, 1923 to her parents, Thomas Ephraim and Blanche Ethel Ott Richards in Tropic. Helma married Lewis Thad Haas on September 14, 1942, in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA. They had three children, son Kenneth Lewis (Susan) Haas, Carson City, NV; daughters: Larraine Lucine (Richard) Fox, Tustin, CA; and Elaine Haas, Tropic. Grandchildren include: Kristin Elaine (Tim) Feltner, Chad Lewis (Lisa) Haas, Karen Dzyak, Andrew (Denise) Word, Richard Wayne (Cassie) Fox, Michael Scott (Sharla) Fox, Gary Gene (Mindy) Fox, Aimee Suzanne (Grant) Millman, Timothy James (Shanna) Leech, Gregory Thomas Leech.
In her younger years, she lived during the great depression and as a young adult experienced World War II. After graduating from Tropic High School, Helma moved to North Hollywood California and worked at Lockheed where she met her husband, Lew. After their marriage, Lew Joined the Army Air Corps and fought in World War II. During this time Helma lived in Denver, CO where she had her first child, Ken. While Lew was overseas, she moved to Vallejo, CA and lived with her parents. Lew was a prisoner of war in Germany and when he was liberated, he and Helma lived in California where she cared for him and helped him work through his war experiences. During this time their daughter Lucine was born. They moved to San Diego where Lew worked on the Naval base and their third child Elaine joined the family.
The next move took them to Payson, UT where Helma and Lew opened an appliance store and T.V. /radio repair business. They moved back to Palmdale, CA in 1963 where Lew worked at Lockheed. At retirement, they returned to Tropic until their deaths.
Helma was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions. She volunteered her time in her children’s schools and served as P.T.A. president. One of her fondest volunteer positions was that of a Pink Lady in the Palmdale Hospital and interacting with the patients there. She was a wonderful, supportive wife, loving mother, grandmother, and aunt. She was kind and helped all those around her. She was a care-giver, not only to her husband, but also to siblings who needed her care. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved her family and friends dearly. That love was wholeheartedly returned as family and friends frequently came to see her. She made home a welcoming, happy place.
Helma is survived by her children; grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Hazel Elaine (Don) Henderson, Las Vegas, NV.
Preceding her in death is her husband Lew; parents; brothers: Thomas Nyle (Merle), James Glee, and Floyd David (Alaska) Richards; sisters: Vilate Richards, Maxine (Jay) Crosby, Norma (Julius) Dalley, Marian Elizabeth Richards, RVean (Warren) Sheets, Kathleen Shumway; grandson, Greg Leech; great-great-granddaughters: Leyna Leech and Kimber Christensen; granddaughter-in-law, Chrishel Leech.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the Garfield Memorial Hospital Staff and the Hospice Staff for their care and support during this time.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 16, 2018 at 12:00 Noon in the Tropic Ward Chapel, where friends may call from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Tropic Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti. On line guestbook at www.maglebymortuary.com
