Hazel Houston Salanti

Panguitch/Las Vegas

On Thursday, February 22, 2013, in St. George, Utah, our mother, grandmother and friend, Hazel Worthen Houston Rich Salanti, 81, completed her earthly test and returned to her Heavenly home. She was born March 2, 1931 in Panguitch to Herbert Nello and Alice Prince Worthen. She was the seventh of 12 children. She was raised in Panguitch and graduated from Panguitch High School in 1949.

She married and was sealed to Wallace Matheson "Mat" Houston, August 2, 1948 in the Logan LDS Temple. To this union was born four children. Mat preceded her in death on November 11, 1986. She married Mayo Rich October 1989 in St. George. He preceded her in death January 19, 1998. She married Nick Salanti in Las Vegas January 19,1999.

Mom loved to work and occupied many positions during her lifetime, including telephone operator, school lunch manager, waitress, auto parts manager, bank teller, county clerk and owner of Houston Ranch and Steak House. She took pride in keeping her home clean and making sure her windows were continually washed. She was an excellent cook, her speciality was baking rolls and making sure she had bottled enough jelly to top them off. She loved activities surrounding a "good party" and was often the life of the party. She loved to shop and did it as well as anyone we know.

She lived most of her life in Panguitch with summers spent at the ranch at Panguitch Lake. She loved the mountains, hunting, fishing, picnicking, and hauling wood and going for a "little ride". The last 20 years she lived in Las Vegas where she finally was able to enjoy the things that she had always heard were so great. Most of her evenings were spent at one of the many famous eating establishments. While there she did comment on how homesick for the mountains she was.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved her callings as president of YWMIA and her service in the Relief Society presidency. She taught us not to be judgmental and to be self-sufficient and reliant.

She is survived by her husband, Nick, of Las Vegas; children: Geneil Weideman, Salt Lake City; Joyce Marshall, Cedar City; Randy (Nancy) Houston, Panguitch; and Elizabeth (Terry) Trujillo, Kearns; 18 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren with three on the way; one great-great-granddaughter; siblings: Sheldon Dick (Joan) Worthen, Orem; Joseph Alan (Deanna) Worthen, Payson; Alice Jean (Stephen) Dickson, Morgan;

She was also preceded in death by her parents; grandchildren: Sam Randall Houston and Shelly Marshall; siblings: Bill Worthen, Frank Worthen, Bob Worthen, Parley Worthen, Pearl Rowley, Betty Jo LeFevre, Dorothy Rowley, and Pat Fox.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the Panguitch 1 st Ward Chapel, 550 South 100 West, where friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Panguitch Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
