Hartley Newby
Monroe, Utah
Hartley Newby, a life-long Monroe resident, passed away June 30, 2018 in St. George. He was born in Monroe, November 22, 1922 to Alfred S. and Ane Marie Washburn Newby. He married Jeraldine Roberts, June 2, 1948 in Monroe. She preceded him in death, July 23, 2010.
Hartley served three years in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a navigator on a B-24 bomber in the South Pacific. He graduated from Snow College and received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from the University of Utah. He was a school teacher for 37 years, teaching in elementary, junior high and high schools in Marysvale, Elsinore and Monroe.
He loved Monroe. Hartley’s contributions to the community included serving as the Justice of the Peace for ten years, a member of the Monroe City Council and a member of the Planning and Zoning Commissions.
You could always find him outside doing something. Hartley’s love was riding his horse, farming, gardening and lately, changing his landscaping in the front yard or planting fruit trees in the back yard. He built two homes in Monroe: one for his family and the one on main street for his mother, Dolly. He was a mathematician, electrician, carpenter, farmer, horseman, pool player and many things more, but most of all he was our dad and grandfather and we will try hard to follow in his footsteps.
Hartley is survived by his daughters: Jill Newby (Dan Lee), Jane Kimball, and Kim (Dan) Neilson; daughter-in-law, Carrie Newby; 7 granddaughters and 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Lowell (Gayle) Nilsson.
Also preceded in death by parents; step-father, Alma Nilsson; son, Hartley Gene Newby; brother, AJ (Mary) Newby.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Retreat at Sunbrook and Alpha Home Health & Hospice in St. George.
