Grace Elizabeth Ormond Barney, 99, passed away April 21, 2011 at the Garfield Memorial Hospital in Panguitch. She was born July 16, 1911 in Escalante to George Henry and Ida Deuel Ormond. é , rented a room and was finishing the 11 th grade when the Depression came along. She returned to Escalante and graduated from high school the following year.
Grace grew up on her father’s ranch in Boulder, near the Ormond Peak in upper Boulder. She loved riding horses and when she was 17 years old broke and trained a blue roan mare named Namo that was the envy of many cowboys in the area.
Grace completed the eighth grade in Boulder, went to Escalante to live with her Grandpa and Grandma Deuel and attended the ninth grade. The next year she went to Richfield, worked for a family who was a friend of her mother for board and room and attended the tenth grade. The next year she went back to Richfield, found a job in a caf
Grace married Claron Otto Barney September 11, 1931 in Escalante. They were later divorced.
Grace was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served many years as a teacher in Sunday School and Primary in Escalante. She was loved by all her family and friends.
She is survived by her children: Ray O (Lois), Escalante; Mac C (Jo), Cedar City; Wade (Shelley) Escalante; 21 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Alice Ormond and Hannah Ormond.
She is preceded in death by: parents; son and daughter-in-law, Roe V (Clema) Barney; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn (Everett) Williams; grandson, Shon Barney; great-great-grandchildren: Jaxson, Jade and Lexi Laws; brothers and sisters: Glen (Ruby) Ormond, Gertrude (Lester) Moosman, Carter (Katherine) Ormond, Raymond Ormond, Burns (Blom) Ormond, Reed Ormond, Bud (Carolyn) Ormond.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 12:00 Noon in the Escalante 1 st Ward Chapel, 80 South Center where friends may call from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Escalante Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
