Garth Hawley
Annabella, Utah
Ray Garth Hawley, 100 years old, passed from this life to the next quietly in the afternoon of August 18, 2018. Born May 7, 1918 in Inverury (Central Valley), Utah to Charles Henry and Nellie Rostron Hawley, he was the youngest of nine children.
Garth’s early childhood was spent on a farm in Inverury, after which work took the family to the Uintah Basin before moving to Price where he attended school. Obtaining his first job at a bakery while in the fourth grade, Garth cleaned bread mixers and floors and enjoyed eating the doughnuts and rolls that weren’t sold. The family left Price and returned to Annabella after the Depression began.
Joining the Utah National Guard in 1934 at the age of 16, Garth also served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Utah. He was employed as a shipyard welder in southern California from 1941-1943, leaving that position to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He married Violet Fawn Anderson, December 17, 1943 in Denver, Colorado while on leave from his military service. The marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles California Temple. She preceded him in death in October 2004.
When Fawn’s health began to diminish, Garth was at her side caring for her. He also cared for his son, Lee who passed away in April of 2011.
Garth lived life independently, optimistically, and full of joy. He always thirsted for knowledge and had an incredibly keen mind for all facts, especially family and town history. He enjoyed gardening, reading and studying the universe through his telescope. His never ending love and joy will live on through his family that he adored and who adored him.
Garth recently celebrated his 100th birthday, where over a hundred family members and friends came from far and near to celebrate with him, to his delight.
He has 3 sons, including: Ronald Floyd (Geraldine) Hawley, Jon Charles (Randa) Hawley, both of Annabella; and the late Lee Hawley. He has 4 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; 7 step-grandchildren, 25 step-great-grandchildren and 5 step-great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Nellie (LaRell) Nebeker, Mary Lavern (Wm. Bliss) Daniels; brothers: Charles Rostron (Tina) Hawley, Kenneth Reid (Cleone) Hawley, Leland and Lee (twins), John Q Lyle and Hugh J. (Rosella) Hawley.
