Evon Payne

Monroe, Utah

Evon Payne, 90 of Monroe, passed away April 19,2013 at home working in his garden. Sharing everything from his garden with family and neighbors was something he loved. He was born April 13, 1923in Monroe to Elwood Thomas and Myrle Hunt Payne. He married Arvilla "Billie" Jensen, March 10, 1944 and was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple, September 7, 1954.

He served in the Army during WWII in France and Germany. He was the sole surviving charter member of the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the American Legion and SUP. He and his wife served in the New York Rochester Mission in Buffalo from 1990-1991. He was called as bishop of the Monroe 2 nd Ward in September 1996 for 5½ years. He was loved by the ward members, especially the children and youth. He and his wife served diligently in the Manti Temple, which they both loved doing for eight years.

He was a wonderful example of kindness and love to anyone he met, and everyone loved him. He was hard working and was the best fix-it man around. He fixed many flat bike tires for the missionaries and great-grandkids. He loved the mountains, hunting, camping, reading, learning and teaching us about wild flowers, rocks and nature, and the many experiences he lives. Many would wait in anticipation to listen to the master story teller. Most of all he loved the gospel and his family and they loved him. A gentle, unassuming servant, he was a true hero in so many ways. We will truly miss him.

He is survived by his wife, Billie; and his children: Bonita (Bill) Reynolds, New Zealand Auckland Mission; Deanna Gilchrist, St. George; Jeannie (Kelly) Clements, Springville; James (Merrilee) Payne, Monroe; 17 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter; brothers and sisters: Dick (Joline) Payne, Monroe; Emelie (Ross) Christensen, Richfield; Tom (Merrily) Payne, Joseph; Mike (Unsil) Payne, Monroe.
