Erma Andrus Young
Sterling, UT
Erma Andrus Young, 90, of Sterling, Utah, passed away 6 March 2014 at her home in Sterling. Erma was born in Marion, Summit County, Utah, 2 October 1923, to John Ivan Andrus Sr. and Cordelia Stevenson. A woman of fortitude and grace, Erma lived a long life underscored with strength, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, love, and charitable service.
Erma was the second of ten children. When Erma was just 7 years old, her mother, Cordelia, passed away, leaving 3 young children: John, Erma, and Edith. Erma’s father, John Ivan, later married Susie May Duke Winterton, a young widowed mother with 3 children: Norman, Margie, and Harold. John Ivan and Susie then had 4 more children, Ken, Louise, Doug, and James. Despite the hardships associated with these circumstances, they all worked together to sustain family harmony and are unified in their love for one another.
Erma went on a few dates with Keith Willden Young while they attended South Summit High School together. They wrote each other throughout WWII, where Keith served in the South Pacific Theater. They continued courting after the war and were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on 27 June 1946. They remained faithful and devoted to each other, and to the gospel and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, throughout their lives and treasured the fact that they were married for eternity.
Children of Keith and Erma are Robert and Wynn Young, Sterling, UT; Brian and Rebecca Young, Pima, AZ; Irene and Scott (deceased) Allred, Cleveland, UT; Clive and Kristy Young, Kaysville, UT; Anita and Colby Wight, Orem, UT; Lyle and Julie Young, Gunnison, UT; Edward and Maxine Young, Orem, UT; foster children Ronald and Lenora Bowman, Layton, UT; Emery Bowman, Chicago, IL; Eddie Roehrig, and Olivia Joe; 33 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by 2 brothers, 1 sister, and 1 son-in-law.
Erma and Keith resided in Provo, Orem, Hunter, Tabiona, and Sterling, Utah. Erma lived a life of service to her family, community, and church. She loved everyone and had a special place in her heart for the youth. She served in many church callings, including Relief Society President, Compassionate Service Leader, Primary President, Organist, Chorister, Teacher, and Temple Worker. She served a two-year mission with Keith as Director of the Idaho Falls Temple Visitors Center. They also served together as missionaries at Cove Fort for 3 years. Though Erma was a talented seamstress, quilter, and teacher, she preferred to be remembered as one who loved the Lord and her family, and lived her life accordingly.
