Donald William Schaefer, 93, of Oroville, California, passed away September 13, 2012 at the Monroe Canyon Assisted Living Center. He was born April 30, 1919 in New Britain, Connecticut to Frederick William and Else Evelyn Brahe (of the Tycho Brahe Family) Schaefer. He married Arba Josephine Miller in November 4, 1961 in Richmond, California, who had three children from previous marriages. She preceded him in death August 10, 1997. He lived in Oroville, CA for more than 40 years.
Donald grew up in Connecticut and was a member of the Lutheran Church; his dad was a Lutheran minister. During World War II he served America more than five years as a Conscientious Objector fighting forest fires in California and offering himself as a “guinea pig” in New York. He just could not kill another human being.
Donald was an amazing step-father. Imagine letting your 16 year old step-daughter drive your Porsche. He had great physical abilities. He could wiggle his ears all his life to the delight of little children, performed the gymnastic iron cross during college years, and walked on his hands—even upstairs—at the ripe age of 43. He loved to golf and at one time served as an assistant golf pro. Donald had an appreciation for art and was constantly encouraging people to always do a little better at whatever talents they had. He enjoyed the classical music of Beethoven and Bach, especially when driving down the road with the wind in his face. His sense of humor and “humane” was alive till the end.
Survived by step-children: Keith (Emilia Doris) Thompson, Brevard, NC; Karen Silveira, Arvada, CO; Katie (Lee) Rollins, Annabella, UT; 13 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceded in death by parents; sister Eveline; companion, Carrol Cox-Hansen.
