Our beloved father and grandfather, Dewain Calvin Washburn, 90, completed this life on January 29, 2014 in Hurricane. He was born on October 25, 1923 in Monroe to Peter Daniel ‘Dan’ and Hannah Magleby Washburn, the youngest of three children.
Dewain grew up in Monroe. His parents had a farm and some animals so his job was to feed them and milk the cows. A favorite memory of Dewain’s was staying for several summers at Fish Lake while his father built the lodge there. Peter Daniel was the construction foreman for the job so Dewain got to fish and stay in a cabin with his dad all summer. His dad taught Dewain about woodworking tools and how to use them. This would help Dewain all of his life and help to shape his career.
Dewain always loved school and was an excellent student. He attended South Sevier High School where he served as junior class president and as student body president. After graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Braunda Joyce Larson on December 23, 1942, in Elsinore. The marriage was solemnized later in the Manti Utah Temple. Braunda preceded him in death on October 25, 2009.
Dewain joined the US Army and served our country during WWII. He then attended Utah State University. Over the next several years he earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Education. In his summers when he was off from school, he became a certified potato seed inspector. He traveled all over the southern part of Utah inspecting seed. Dewain valued education and demonstrated this by working in the schools of Sevier County for more than 42 years. He taught shop classes for many years and was a principal in Salina. After this he began teaching design and drafting classes in Richfield and was the director of the vocational center there (Sevier Valley Tech), which is presently known as Snow College-Richfield. He served at the "Tech" as director for 25 years.
Dewain had great leadership abilities. In 1972 he was elected to the Utah State Legislature where he served for 10 years. He also served on the Sevier Valley Hospital Board for 29 years, as well as president of many education associations.
Dewain always loved teaching and he said many times that he never met a student or teacher that he didn't like. He had a remarkable way of bringing out the best in each student and helping them to develop their own special talents.
Dewain loved the outdoors and enjoyed many hours hunting, fishing and camping with his son Danny. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings.
He is survived by his children: Danny (Linda) Washburn, Monroe and Peggy (LaMar) Buhler, Hurricane; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also preceded in death by his parents and sisters Bernice (Ellis) Wade and Beryl (Parley) Young.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Hurricane Health and Rehabilitation Center for their tender and loving care of Dad.
